Where Should Your Website Backups Live? A Plain Guide to Offsite Copies
A backup kept on the same server as the website is not much of a backup. If that server fails, is hacked or is wiped by a mistake, the copy goes with it. An offsite copy is stored somewhere else, so one failure cannot take both.
What makes a good backup destination?
- Separate place. Different disk, different machine, ideally a different location.
- Standard access. If your backup tool speaks SFTP, FTPS, WebDAV, Samba, S3 or Rsync, you are not locked into one product.
- History. Snapshots and older file versions let you go back to the copy from before the problem, not just the latest one, which may already be damaged.
- Room to grow. Sites, databases, mail archives and workflow exports add up quickly.
A simple routine works for most small businesses: automatic backups every night, a weekly check that files really open, and one restore test a quarter on a spare folder.
ShoHost's SDrive backup storage with SFTP, WebDAV and S3 access and snapshots is built for this kind of offsite copy, with capacity from 1 TB up and snapshots on hourly, daily, weekly and monthly schedules.
